Di alam, nikel ditemukan dalam bentuk sulfida dan oksida.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secara global, jumlah cadangan nikel dunia sekitar 72% berada dalam batuan oksida yang biasa disebut laterit dan sisanya batuan sulfida. Namun demikian, hanya sekitar 42% dari total produksi nikel dunia bersumber dari bijih laterit (Dalvi dkk., 2004).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hingga saat ini produksi nikel terus meningkat seiring dengan semakin meningkatnya permintaan dunia. Akan tetapi, permasalahan yang akan dihadapi di masa mendatang adalah jumlah cadangan nikel sulfida yang semakin menipis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oleh karena itu, pemanfaatan laterit sebagai sumber nikel harus dilakukan meskipun kandungan nikelnya lebih rendah dibandingkan sulfida (Norgate dan Jahanshahi, 2010). Tipe bijih sulfida ditemukan di belahan bumi subtropis sedangkan bijih oksida atau bijih laterit banyak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ditemukan di belahan bumi tropis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebagai negara tropis, Indonesia memiliki cadangan nikel dalam bentuk bijih laterit terbesar ketiga didunia setelah Kaledonia Baru dan Filipina (Rochani dan Saleh, 2013). Terbitnya Peraturan Menteri Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) No. 8 Tahun 2015 tentang peningkatan nilai tambah mineral, mendukung deretan pentingnya penelitian untuk pengolahan bijih laterit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pengolahan laterit dapat menggunakan proses pirometalurgi dan hidrometalurgi. Hidrometalurgi merupakan proses ekstraksi logam yang dilakukan pada suhu yang relatif rendah dengan cara pelindian menggunakan larutan kimia, sedangkan pirometalurgi merupakan proses ekstraksi logam yang dilakukan pada suhu tinggi (Kyle, 2010).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saat ini proses hidrometalurgi yang digunakan untuk mengolah laterit dengan kadar nikel rendah yaitu tipe limonit, sedang dibangun di Indonesia. Penggunaan asam inorganik dalam pelindian berakibat pada perlunya penanganan limbah asam inorganik yang dihasilkan. Untuk menghindari efek samping berbahaya yang disebabkan oleh penggunaan asam inorganik maka dikembangkan proses pelindian asam organik yang lebih ramah lingkungan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maluku Utara menjadi salah satu daerah pertama yang akan memiliki industri bahan baku untuk baterai mobil listrik dengan teknologi hidrometalurgi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industri yang sedang dibangun Harita Nickel itu, direncanakan mulai berproduksi pada akhir 2020. Pabrik ini diklaim sebagai yang pertama beroperasi di Indonesia, sehingga menjadi kebanggan tersendiri bagi daerah itu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selama ini, smelter yang ada di Indonesia menyerap nikel kadar tinggi 1,7 ke atas. Sedangkan proses hidrometalurgi yang dikembangkan oleh Harita di Obi, menggunakan nikel kadar rendah di bawah 1,7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industri baru ini akan membutuhkan 1.920 orang tenaga kerja profesional, belum termasuk kontraktor dan industri pendukung lainnya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industri ini diharapkan segera berproduksi sesuai dengan rencana yang telah ditetapkan.
